What do piano movers in Melbourne cost?

What Melbourne's piano movers published in October 2026, read side by side, and the questions that decide whether the quote you accept is the price you pay.

What do piano movers in Melbourne cost?

Piano movers in Melbourne cost about $290 to $470 for an upright and $530 to $720 for a grand on the published flat-rate card at Harry The Piano Mover in October 2026. Hourly crews start lower. Access, not distance, usually decides what you pay.

I choose each of our pianos in Japan, and every one is checked in our Melbourne workshop before it reaches the showroom floor, so I watch these instruments get lifted, wheeled and walked up stairs more often than most people will. What follows is what Melbourne's movers published in October 2026, what the headline numbers leave out, and what a move does to the piano.

How much does it cost to move a piano in Melbourne?

Three kinds of pricing sit side by side here, and reading them straight across is what the movers' own guides never do.

Source, and when we read itUprightGrandHow it is priced
Harry The Piano Mover, October 2026$290 inner suburbs and CBD, $380 outer suburbs, $470 outer Melbourne$530, $630 and $720 across the same zonesFlat rate by zone. The card does not say whether GST is included.
Yes Movers pricing guide, updated May 2026$280 to $450 under 20 km, ground floor both ends; $450 to $700 with one or two flights$550 to $900 baby grand, $900 to $1,800 concert grandIndicative ranges, GST not stated.
Jake Move, October 2026From $135 an hour for a 4 tonne truck, two hour minimumFrom $175 an hour for the 10 tonne truckHourly, and the page says all prices exclude GST. Uprights carry a heavy item charge on top of furniture rates.

Quote marketplaces read lower again. Airtasker's Melbourne eastern suburbs page, last updated 28 September 2026, gives an average of $186 to $299 and a median of $225. That is nearer what a general removalist with a trolley will take on than what a piano specialist with a board, a skid and three people charges, and the page does not explain how it reaches those figures.

What makes one quote higher than another?

Steps are the usual surprise. Harry The Piano Mover's base rates cover three or four entry steps, or easy ramp access, and past that the card quotes $20 per step and fees above $200 where extra staff are needed (rate card, October 2026).

Flights are priced differently again. The Yes Movers guide puts a stairs surcharge at $80 to $150 per flight beyond the ground floor, and crane hire for a third floor flat with no lift at $1,500 to $3,500 (guide updated May 2026). Above the ground floor with no lift, have the access assessed before you accept a figure.

Then there is what the headline rate excludes. An hourly quote can add a call-out fee set by distance from the depot, as Jake Move's does from its Notting Hill base, and it carries a two hour minimum, so a twenty minute move across Mount Waverley still bills two hours. It also excludes GST, which Jake Move states plainly and the flat-rate cards we read in October 2026 did not mention either way. Two quotes that look $40 apart can be the same price, or $70 apart, once you have asked.

What should I ask a piano removalist?

  • Is this a flat rate or hourly, and does it include GST?
  • How many entry steps does the base price cover, and what does each step past that add?
  • What equipment comes with the crew: a piano board or skid, a proper piano trolley, a hydraulic tailgate?
  • Who dismantles a grand, and who refits the legs, lyre and lid at the other end?
  • What does your insurance cover? Public liability covers damage to the house, goods in transit covers the load in the van, and neither is automatically cover for the instrument.
  • Are you accredited by the Australian Furniture Removers Association? Consumer Affairs Victoria suggests considering an industry-accredited provider, in a notice that also reported 726 reports about removalists in 2020 (Consumer Affairs Victoria, January 2021).
  • Will you put it in writing, itemised?

The insurance answer matters more than people expect. CHOICE's removalist guide, last updated in July 2015, notes that most removalists carry cover for their vehicle rather than your belongings, and that transit cover is something you pay for (CHOICE). Of the specialists we read in October 2026, Jake Move names goods in transit to $50,000 and public liability to $20 million, while Harry The Piano Mover says both policies are active and current without putting a figure on either.

If the piano is going into an apartment, the building has a say before the mover does. Every Victorian owners corporation has rules for the use of common property, and where it has made none, the model rules in the Owners Corporations Regulations 2018 apply (Consumer Affairs Victoria, updated 22 April 2026). Rules differ building to building and they change, so ask how the lift is booked and whether a heavy item needs approval before the mover quotes.

Does a piano need tuning after a move?

Nearly always, and not on the same day. A piano holds its pitch through string tension on a wooden frame, and the frame takes two to three weeks to settle into a new room's temperature and humidity. Tune it before it settles and you have paid for a tuning that drifts. The Melbourne figures and the waiting period are in what piano tuning costs in Melbourne, and the reason rooms matter so much here is in what humidity a piano needs in Australia.

Can a piano go up stairs?

Usually, with the right crew and staircase. An upright goes up in one piece, so the stairwell has to be wide enough to turn the whole case: Kawai lists its K-300 upright at 227 kg, a figure we set out beside the grand dimensions in upright versus grand pianos. A grand is dismantled first, lid, music desk, pedal lyre and legs off, so a tight turn can suit it better. Price follows the count, by step or by flight, so measure the landing, the turn and the narrowest doorway before the quote, not on the day.

What changes when you are buying rather than moving?

A move you arrange and a delivery that comes with the piano are different transactions. Our instruments are pre-loved, or second-hand as most people search it, and they arrive by white-glove delivery, booked and tracked in the customer portal, with the first tuning included three to four weeks after delivery, which is the settling window above rather than a round number. The delivery and warranty page sets out what the Signature Pianos warranty covers.

If you are weighing up a piano and want to know what getting it into your room involves, bring us the room: doorway width, number of steps, lift or no lift. We will tell you what the piano weighs and what the access means before you commit. Book a visit to the Mount Waverley showroom and we can work it through with the instrument in front of us.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to move a piano in Melbourne?

On the flat-rate card at Harry The Piano Mover in October 2026, an upright runs $290 in the inner suburbs and CBD, $380 in the outer suburbs and $470 in outer Melbourne, with grands at $530, $630 and $720. Hourly crews such as Jake Move start at $135 an hour plus GST with a two hour minimum.

What should I ask a piano removalist?

Ask whether the rate is flat or hourly and whether it includes GST, how many entry steps the base price covers and what each extra step costs, and what the insurance actually covers. Public liability covers your house and goods in transit covers the load in the van, and neither is automatically cover for the instrument.

Does a piano need tuning after a move?

Nearly always, but not on the same day. Give the piano two to three weeks to settle into the new room's temperature and humidity, or the tuning drifts out again. Our own first tuning is booked three to four weeks after delivery for that reason.

Can a piano go up stairs?

Usually, if the stairwell is wide enough to turn the case. An upright goes up in one piece at well over 200 kg, while a grand has its lid, music desk, pedal lyre and legs removed first. Movers price stairs by the step or by the flight, so measure the landing and the narrowest doorway before you ask for a quote.

Do piano movers in Melbourne charge GST on top?

Some do and some do not say. Jake Move states that all its rates exclude GST, while the flat-rate cards we read in October 2026 did not say either way. Ask, because it moves a quote by about a tenth.
